This master plan community located on the big island of Hawaii seeks to connect a village center with multi- and single-family housing while defining culture and identity within the blended space. Proposed as a workforce family agricultural community, Nakahili aims to provide over 1,000 residences with land for cultivation. Community infrastructure will be located on-site along with amenities such as a communal market, pool, green, and playground. Over 50% of for sale properties will be priced in conformity with the County of Hawaii’s Office of Housing and Community Development’s Affordable Housing Guidelines. West Hawaii Today
Project Overview Continued
Nakahili, named after the ceremonial feathers used in indigineous hawaiian ceremonies, brings accessible housing to the Big Island of Hawaii. Anchored by a commercial community core and central park, units become less dense as they move away from the project center. Multifamily flats come in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom variations with shared surface parking, and single family lots range from 2-4 bedrooms. Each single family lot is sized to accommodate subsistence farming and agriculture, with the potential of an ohana or future building.
Project materials and form are influenced by the Hawaiian-western culture of the “paniolo”, or Hawaiian cowboy. This inland site is known for its grassy plains and cattle ranching, and is set to bring housing to hundreds of local Hawaiians.
