Project Overview
Sweden’s premier ski destination, Åre , is home to multiple resorts and the winter sporting events they accommodate. A new resort at the base of Kabinbane aims to update underdeveloped existing facilities for the mountain with all primary user groups in mind. Envisioning a ski resort that provides ski-in/ski-out accommodations, new retail possibilities, and a range of amenities served as a programmatic foundation for creating an accessible and welcoming gateway to the mountain. Guest and owner arrival, utilization, and overall experience were studied in depth to inform key spatial relationships and activity hubs.
Architecturally, the identity for Kabinbane is informed by the architectural features common of the Jämtland region, both in terms of natural geological elements and indigenous dwellings. Dark, textural masses contrasting the surrounding snow lift and separate to create a permeable, light, and warm public zone of services, retail, and event. Residences are then allowed to maintain privacy while still connecting to the amenities and activity below.
